The South Island lost to France 16-12 at the Addington Showgrounds.〔Coffey, John. ''Canterbury XIII'', Christchurch, 1987.〕 The South Island included Bernie Green, captain Ray Baxendale, Wayne Dwyer, Barry Edkins and Wayne Wallace.
